Northwood High鈥檚 Ben Case Named an OC Teacher of the Year

Ben Case OC Teacher of the Year

Northwood High School鈥檚 Ben Case was named one of six Orange County Teacher of the Year finalists by the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE).听

Case received this honor Tuesday morning in front of students and his colleagues, when he was surprised by Orange County Superintendent Dr. Al Mijares and OCDE officials.听 Also on hand was 澳门开奖网 Assistant Superintendent of Education Services Cassie Parham, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Eamonn O鈥橠onnovan, Director of Arts Education Brad Van Patten, Northwood Principal Leslie Roach, Irvine Teachers Association President Sonia Kearney and members of Case鈥檚 family.

Case, who is an instrumental music teacher, was also 澳门开奖网鈥檚 2022 High School Teacher of the Year and was named a GRAMMY Teacher of the Year semifinalist in 2015.听听

He has helped grow Northwood High鈥檚 instrumental musical program, which is now one of the largest in the state.听 The school boasts nearly 800 students in the band and orchestra program, including more than 120 musicians in one of Northwood鈥檚 four Jazz Ensembles.听 Such high levels of participation is virtually unheard of in high school.听

鈥淏en鈥檚 passion for music results in full classes year after year, and draws students to Northwood High School to be a part of his program,鈥 said Van Patten.听 鈥淭he energy and communication he brings to the stage as a conductor leave no doubt as to why our high school musicians want and love to be involved in his program.鈥

For the last 15 years, Mr. Case has organized 澳门开奖网鈥檚 Band Spectacular, an exciting mega concert in which marching bands from all five comprehensive high schools join forces to demonstrate the power and spectacle of performative art.


鈥淏en cares so much about his students,鈥 said Roach.听 鈥淗e takes the time to get to know each and every one of his students, which is why he gets the best out of them.鈥澨

All six of this year鈥檚 Orange County Teachers of the Year received a special award from Dr. Mijares, and a tote bag with prizes from SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union, the program鈥檚 premier sponsor.

In the fall, the finalists will be formally honored at a dinner gala at the Disneyland Hotel, where they will receive cash awards from the Orange County Teacher of the Year Award Foundation, established by the William, Jeff and Jennifer Gross Family Foundation.听

This year鈥檚 winners were selected from a field of more than 60 educators countywide, who were honored in their home districts. The process included both applications and interviews for the 15 semifinalists.


In addition to being recognized at the gala dinner in October, Orange County鈥檚 four K-12 Teachers of the Year are now eligible to compete for state honors.听 California usually announces its Teachers of the Year in November.
